Balayage is frequently confused with hair colour or style. In truth, balayage is a hair colouring process that involves painting dye onto sections of hair freehand to create ombre-like highlights. Because it’s freehand, it’s also simple to do at home in a few simple steps. While “highlights” might refer to foils, free-painting, ombre, and other techniques, “balayage” is a specialised highlighting method. Not all balayage highlights, but all highlights are balayage.
Balayage creates a sun-kissed, natural-looking hair colour with softer, less visible regrowth. When it comes to producing a natural, multi-tonal finish, the main notion is that less is more. To generate various dimensions in colour, the technique employs regions of light and shade.
Balayage Hair Colour – A Great Technique for Your Hairs
Balayage hair colour is a fantastic technique because it doesn’t leave your roots with firm, visible lines of colour. Hair looks more natural as it grows out. Try balayage for a more natural transition from virgin to colored hair if you’ve been bothered by that telltale inch of roots as your hair comes in. Balayage is a low-maintenance style that doesn’t require touch-ups every 4-6 weeks as a result of this. Bonus: Balayage, unlike foil highlights, takes less equipment and is easier to perform at home. (Reclaim an hour of your life that would have been wasted stripping hair foils!) Overall, balayage gives your hair colour a dynamic aspect and helps you achieve a sophisticated style while yet looking natural.
How to Apply Balayage Hair Colour At Home
-
Prepare the Colour
Start with dry, unwashed hair and rub a little moisturising cream around your hairline to prevent stains. Wrap a towel around your shoulders, brush your hair, then put your gloves on to protect your hands and clothing from the hair dye. Then carefully read the instruction sheet.
-
Mix the Colour
Remove the applicator’s top and add the bleaching powder to the developer, followed by the colourant cream. Replace the applicator on the development bottle and shake vigorously.
-
Apply to the Ends of the Hairs
Part your hair in the centre and use a clip to fix the top section. Brush a tiny bit of the combined colour down from the mid-lengths to the ends using the brush. Stop here for a more natural look.
-
Make sure to Apply through the Hairs
Allow the remainder of your hair to fall out. Start a few inches away from the roots and apply the rest of the colour in unequal chunks throughout the hair lengths.
-
Wait for Half an Hour
Starting as soon as you complete applying the hair colour, leave it on for 30 minutes.
-
Wash your Hairs
Wash your hair thoroughly until the water is clear. To leave hair feeling soft and smooth, apply the colour conditioner, packed with a nourishing blend of avocado, olive, and shea oils. Allow it to sit for two minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Hair should be towel-dried and styled.
How long does the Balayage Hair Colour last?
According to Josh Wood, master colorist and Redken’s Global Colour Creative Director, the depth of balayage can range from a “few minor highlights that will only take a matter of minutes to a full on, triple process effect that can take up to 3 hours.”
Compared to conventional colour, a multi-tonal, layered balayage might take long. However, the advantage of the application is that you will be able to wait longer between colour appointments. It can take as little as 45 minutes if you only want a few balayage babylights.
