The Basics of PCB Manufacturing
The PCB manufacturing process involves many steps. For example, the copper thickness of a PCB is specified by the weight of copper per square foot. This is easier to measure, and one ounce per square foot is equivalent to 1.344 mils, or 34 micrometers. Heavy copper is defined as a layer of copper with a thickness exceeding three ounces per square foot, or 4.2 mils. This type of copper is used in circuits with high currents and to dissipate heat.
In the 1960s, surface-mount technology was introduced and became widely used. This technology enables manufacturers to produce smaller, more efficient circuit boards with more electronic components. These advancements led to the introduction of integrated circuit chips, which quickly impacted PCB manufacturing and design. Today, many circuit boards use this method to create high-speed networks. The speed of these circuits is so high, that their density is increased significantly. Printed circuit boards have never been more important to human life.
Printed circuit boards come in single and double-sided varieties. The electrical connections between circuits are made by drilling holes through the substrate and plating the interior of the holes with a conducting material. Multi-layered boards have multiple layers of circuitry, separated by insulation. The plated holes connect components on one circuit layer to those in another. Printed circuit boards have many uses beyond electronic devices. Printed circuit boards are used in printers, elevators, phones, and lights.
